Am I all right? §

• I was not very well last week, but I feel all right now.
• Are you all right?

While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so.

So 做代词^{一般出现在 believe，do，expect， hope，say，tell，think，appear 等之后}

The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone. ^{（…asked for Doctor Millington）中它表示“要求（某人）来（接电话）}

When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said (that) he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.

Certain ^{adj.某个，特定的；某位，一位叫…的}

• Many years ago a certain doctor arrived in London.

a (certain) Mr. John Gilbert ^{某一位名叫约翰.吉尔伯特的先生}

• He is a Leifeng. ^{表示具有雷锋的特征}
• A certain Mrs. Hart is waiting to see you. ^{有位哈特夫人正等着见您( a 通常与表示“某一”的 certain 连用)。}

a + 人名, 表示某一个拥有这个特征的人或我不认识的某某人，翻译为“一个叫xxx的人”，The + adj. 指具有某一类(特征的)人 §

He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hosptial for another two weeks.

another 作为限定词表示“另一个，再一个”的时候，通常与可数的单数名词连用，不和复数形式连用；但是后面可以跟基数词/few+复数名词（它们被当成一个整体）

直接引语的疑问句变为间接引语的疑问句时引号和问号不再使用，且直接疑问句中的倒装语序在转述疑问句里要还原为陈述句语序（主语+动词），有必要还要改变时态。

如果直接引语是问句，变为间接引语时，主句不说 He said，而用 He asked；told 可以后跟问句，还可以跟陈述句。直接引语是表示命令、请求、建议的祈使句通常可用适当的动词后跟不定式来转述，常用的这类动词 有 advise，ask，tell，order，command，warm，invite 等，这些动词后往往有间接宾语，在转述这类祈使句的否定形式时，必须将 not 放在带 to 的不定式之前：

• She reminded/told me to turn off all the lights.
• The teacher was telling/ordering/commanding her students to close their books.
